The State Fair of Texas!

Today was Senior Citizens Day......so Ruth Ann and I decided to take advantage of that and headed to Fair Park. I may mention that you cannot get there by taking Woodall Rogers.....so after going first one way and then another we finally arrived at the Gate 11 entrance. NOT the one I normally go in but we WERE finally THERE!!
We had the BEST time together!! We like the same things when it comes to browsing the exibits....and just about the time this picture was taken I had breathed that heavenly scent that says 'State Fair' to me! I cannot be exactly CERTAIN what it is and it may be a combination of 'smells' but I LOVE it!! Cotton candy, corny dogs, all things FRIED...... rolled up into one heavenly aroma!! Worth the trip for that alone!
I loved this flower pot scare crow.....I think my grandkids would enjoy making these.....on a smaller scale, of course!
They had the Food and Fiber Building all painted up pretty featuring the Texas Wine Country.
Even Elsie the cow was on hand to greet her fans!
The scene was all set with a Texas Wildlife exibit.
Ruth Ann was admiring this waterfall/pond. It would look right at home on their farm down in Ranger!
I was surprised this pic turned out because I dropped my camera and had to put the parts back together again! Guess I got them all in the right places!
We were inspried by all the intricate quilts (Ruth Ann is a master quilter!) and other fine hand crafted projects! This particular one touched off a creative spark in me and I hope to do a version of it for little Abigail Rayne! It looked like a vintage version of scrapbooking and it really appealed to me...not that I do scrapbooking! Summer is BIG TIME into that these days!
Ruth Ann and I tired out at just about the same time so we started the long trek back to the parking lot! We HAD to stop so I could snap this photo of her beside  her dream tractor. She and her husband have a farm and really NEED this! The pic is to let Roy know exactly which ONE to order for her!

So we can now say we have been to the 2010 State Fair of Texas!!
(We were both glad to get home, though! Our feet were hurting!)

Surely GOODNESS and MERCY....

will follow me all the days, all the days, of my life! This hym has been in my mind and heart all day as I have been counting  God's blessings! This  Autumn time of my life.....both literally and in season......is one of the happiest I have ever known!
From simple moments like seeing my husband napping beside July.....

to seeing him holding little Abigale Rayne (even when she was crying!)....
to the joys of holding this little baby in my own arms.......God's blessings are overflowing!
And I am GRATEFUL!

An Evening of Poetry!

Louis Dean and I enjoyed an evening in the gazebo......watching the flames of the fireplace and breathing in the aromatic fragrance of wood smoke! We listened to the night sounds of the neighborhood......parents calling their children, doors closing as they came in, dogs barking. We have several ponds/fountains in the back yard so 'water music' added to the ambience. I am in a Bible group at church and our current study is Psalms.....or poetry as my pastor says! So as we talked of poetry Louis Dean and I began to take turns quoting some of our favorite lines. The last poem is Louis Dean's favorite.....or at least ONE of them!

DON'T QUIT

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IF
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
--Rudyard Kipling
A Good Name
Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls:
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him
And makes me poor indeed.
William Shakespeare, "Othello", Act 3 scene 3
Greatest English dramatist & poet (1564 - 1616)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Men With Broken Hearts
You'll meet many just like me upon life's busy street
With shoulders stooped and heads bowed low and eyes that stare in defeat
Or souls that live within the past where sorrow plays all parts
Where a living death is all that's left for men with broken hearts
You have no right to be the judge to criticize and condemn
Just think but for the grace of God it would be you instead of him
One careless step a thoughtless deed and then the misery starts
And to those who weep death comes cheap these men with broken hearts
Oh so humble you should be when they come passing by
For it's written that the greatest men never get too big to cry
Some lose faith in love and life when sorrow shoots her darts
And with hope all gone they walk alone these men with broken hearts
You've never walked in that man's shoes or saw things through his eyes
Or stood and watched with helpless hands while the heart inside you dies
Some were paupers some were kings and some were masters of the arts
But in their shame they're all the same these men with broken hearts
Life sometimes can be so cruel that a heart will pray for death
God why must these living dead know pain with every breath
So help your brother along the road no matter where he starts
For the God that made you made them too these men with broken hearts

Finally FALL!!!

I am SO thrilled it is FINALLY fall in the DFW area!! Yesterday after we came home from church I opened up some windows and flipped on the attic fan (which I dearly LOVE!) and crawled back into bed and slept peacefully for a few HOURS!! Fall is here and I am SO excited!!! I have had an awesome weekend!
A fellow blogger and long time friend, Marie, sent me this beautiful hand crafted birthday card......which inspired me to give my computer/desk/sewing room area a much needed sprucing up! I have tacked the card into this cool white 'frame thing' I found Wednesday at Goodwill for $2.99. Will add pics and/ or a mirror later and maybe a band of some sort to the top and bottom of the card so it will fit properly. Marie THOUGHT she was sending me a card! Instead I received a birthday greeting AND a new piece of wall art!

I decided I HATED the ugly desk which is totally functional but in a deep dark cover and ALWAYS covered in DUST since it sits right beside the French doors which are usually OPEN weather permitting. SO I covered it with a length of beautiful pumpkin colored nubby textured fabric! Reminds me of that Bible verse...."Love covers a multitude of sins." SO does fabric! I also brought in the plaques that were hanging on the back wall outside the doors. I am loving the 'look'......

Then I took down some needleworks I did in long years past! I have NOT thrown them out yet so let's just say they are 'retired' for the time being! Instead I added the white metal hanging basket my friend, Stephanie, gave me....(I think she RETIRED it! One gal's 'retired things' is another one's new found treasure!) and then hung more of the plaques. I like them SO much better in here than outside!

Saturday afternooon was my grandson's 8 year old birthday party. This is my daughter in law, Leigh Ann, and we discovered we were wearing matching necklaces......and they were from Scotland! Leigh Ann bought hers when she and Jesse were visiting Amber and Mike last October. (A & M lived in Aberdeen for a year.....August 09- August 10.) Amber sent mine for Mother's Day!

We got a good laugh!

Jesse had set up a little 'Wine Bar' for the adults. Let me tell you that Coco Bay wine tastes EXACTLY as the coconut suntan oil SMELLS!! Delicious!

It was a pool party and even though it had rained all morning the water was perfect! Jesse had the pool as well as the spa all heated, then dove in to play Water Dodge Ball with the kids! He is a GREAT dad!!

And he has an excellent sense of humor.....seldom gets ruffled! His kids are blessed to have him as their father!
We played checkers in MiMi Camp this year so Granddad and I bought Sam his very own set!

To put the finishing touch on my weekend, I had CHILDREN pay us a visit! My neighbor kids from around the corner and up the block came to call. These kids are precious and so dear to our hearts. They USED to live right across the street and would take Lucy for walks and stroll over to sit with us on the front porch in the evenings. We sure do miss them even though, technically, they are still in the neighborhood! Tray, Brittany, their baby sister, Nikki, (soon to be one year old in November!) and their cousin, Page, toured my 'decorated for fall' house and then we had snacks and played Chinese Checkers. Nikki got tired so Brittany and Page tucked her into our bed for a little nap and she was out like a light! Now if that is not the perfect way to end a weekend.......well, I don't know what is!!

~ The only reason we ask other people how their weekend was is so we can tell them about our own weekend. ~

It was my BIRTHDAY......

And I have had a ball! The week's activities began with an Eat Pray Love group here on Monday evening.
 We did, indeed, EAT and then PRAY! And it goes without saying how much we all LOVE each other in this group!

The next day Amber came home! This is always a happy occasion!
I enjoyed watching her work while Louis Dean and I sat out in the gazebo. It is always nice when your grown up 'child' comes home. You don't even have to be doing anything in particular....just having them back home and close enough to LOOK at  for awhile does wonders for a mother's heart!

The next day was SUPER exciting and began super EARLY!! Amber and I are so NOT 'Morning People' and yet we managed to arrive at the Tarrant County Courthouse and park right smack dab in front of it at 7:15 AM! Abigail Rayne Parks is now officially adopted and we are all simply beaming with JOY! The judge asked us, "Do ALL of YOU officially promise to SPOIL HER ROTTEN?" and we all said, "We already ARE!" Although in truth, we are determined to love her and pray for her and teach her and train her and keep her as close to our hearts as humanly possible! She is a precious little baby girl!

On Wednesday evening Amber treated me to dinner at Rockfish and then we took in a movie at a nearby theater before returning home to watch a recorded TV program.....all the shows are new to Amber since she was in Scotland for a year!

We saw an episode of 'The Mentalist' and previously one of 'Lie to Me'....which she especially liked since the lead character is from the UK and she is SO familiar with all things UK now!

Thursday was another special 'Birthday' Day as I met my friend, Brenda, for lunch! We worked together for awhile at the same State Farm office and went to church together before that! Our friendship goes way back and we both have September birthdays. This great little BBQ place is just a few doors down from her office so we enjoy having lunch there so we can spend more time visiting!

Friday is what Louis Dean calls 'The Hair Run' as that is Mother's weekly visit to the beauty shop. He opted to stay home and work in the yard so Mother and I had lunch at Carino's together. What a perfect way to spend my birthday......with my MOTHER!!

The celebrating continued on as Summer took me to Rockfish for the second time this week.....I LOVED the fact I went out with first my youngest daughter and now my oldest! We had a great time visiting and I returned to Summer some needleworks SHE had given ME through these past years relating to MOM and motherhood. What a blessing SHE is now enjoying a new dimension as she shares her life with little Abby!

SO all in all I have had a wonderful week celebrating my BIRTHDAY! I was so surprised and touched at the number of people on Facebook who expressed birthday wishes and sent me little notes as well as the  cards I received in the mail and gifts that were totally unexpected! THANK you, ALL!! It has made me feel so good and taken the 'sting' out of growing older. I am praying to grow in GRACE as I age and hopefully not GROW anywhere else.....if you know what I mean!!

Oh, HAPPY Day!!

Yesterday I made that comment more than ONCE!! It WAS a happy day with many to follow as we welcomed a precious little baby girl OFFICIALLY into our family! She was already firmly planted in our hearts!

My daughter, Amber, is an editor (newly named editor in chief of DALLAS Brides!) and she made an awesome post on HER blog almost immediately! SHE is the one who inspired ME to begin a blog in the first place and now SUMMER has also joined the blogging world! I asked Amber if she would guest blog for this post and she graciously agreed! THANKS, Amber!!

Without further ado, here's her take on the big day:

For the past (and first) three months of little Rayne's life, my sister and her partner Sabrina have been working their hardest to obtain full legal rights and officially adopt the teeny cutie.

Me and Rayne.
Her birth parents, who are related to Sabrina, were unwilling and unable to care for the child. But today, the story had a wonderfully happy "ending."

Sabrina, Rayne and Summer at the courthouse.

The adoption is official. And Summer and Sabrina can now lay claim to beautiful Abigail.

It's a done deal! Gavel and all.
It's so heartwarming and incredibly powerful to see a little baby fighting the odds to survive and to finally receive the attention and loving care she so rightfully deserves. And I'm proud and honored that my sister is a part of that.

Me, Rayne and my sister.

Mom and Rayne.

This morning we arrived in full force at the Ft. Worth family court to witness the proceedings and then celebrate the moment when Rayne was pronounced with her new family. There were plenty of tears and lots of hugs, and Rayne managed to sleep through the most important part!

Sabrina's mom, Summer, our mom, Rayne and Sabrina post-court.

Rayne's burp cloth - bearing her nickname - and the pencil gavel from the judge.
  We are all so happy, relieved, and thrilled that the hardest and most unwanted part, the battle, is now over. To celebrate, we visited the Ol' South Original Pancake House for a hearty breakfast, some more cooing and aahing over Rayne and a couple gifts.

I mean, I just had to get some adorable new clothes for the baby girl! She looks so cute in everything.
My sister has also joined the blog world, which makes me proud, and you can read about their new and exciting "Life with Abigail Rayne" right here.

Here's to second chances, new life and oodles of love.

Eat Pray Love

Last night a lovely group of ladies from First Christian Church met for OUR version of 'Eat Pray Love.' We had SO much fun! I think we all may have arrived a bit tired and weary....it WAS a MONDAY after all! By the time we had eaten and prayed and laughed and loved......well, I think we all had a lighter and merrier heart! I know I certainly did!!

On DISPLAY!!

This is the very first time I have been part of an art exhibit! The display will be up through October 9th.

This is the Santa I entered into the competition.
It was kind of fun seeing him hanging around on the walls with so many other works of art!
Sabrina's painting, 'The Golfer' was in last year's show. This year she won with the painting at the top right...
both last year's entry and this one hold special meaning in  her heart since they were gifts to her dad who passed away this past December. Her mom and one of her high school friends joined us last night at the artists reception. It was fun!
I was excited to see I made it into the brochure!
This wonderful musician provided the lovely music. It was an evening I will remember!
